Influence of Charging Conditions on Dust Grain’s Field Ion Emission

چکیده
The research of charging processes of various types of dust grains is important for understanding of the role of dust in dusty plasmas in a space as well as in applications. One of the very important charging process is field ion emission. The field ion emission can limit the positive charge on the dust grain because the positive ions leave a grain surface due to a strong electric field. We analyzed many discharging characteristics of an Au grain of 0.57 μm of radius measured under different conditions (the ion beam energy, ion species, total dose of ion bombarding) and found that the discharging current is determined not only by the surface field intensity but it strongly depends on the structure of the grain surface and on the history of measurements. We have found that the duration of charging (or total dose of the ions impinging the grain) is one of the important parameters. The dose of bombardment determines the number of implanted ions. Since their diffusion toward the surface is very slow (hours for 5 keV ions), the history of the grain should be considered in interpretation of the results.

The Study of Dust-Grain’s Field Ion Emission
Understanding of various charging processes of dust grains is important in many different industrial applications as well as in the space research and theoretical studies of charging. An impact of energetic ions onto a dust grain leads to transfer of charge to the grain. This effect increases the charge of the dust grain until an equilibrium value is reached. After charging, the ion beam is swi...
متن کاملIon Field Emission from Micron-sized Carbon Dust Grains
Ion field emission from dust grains was studied using several glassy carbon grains of different radii from 1.64 to 2.97 μm as dust samples. Each grain was stored in a quadrupole trap under UHV conditions for a long time (days) and charged by argon ions to a high surface potential. When the ion gun was switched off the charged grain started to discharge spontaneously. We found out that the disch...
متن کاملCompressive and rarefactive dust-ion acoustic solitary waves in four components quantum plasma with dust-charge variation
Based on quantum hydrodynamics theory (QHD), the propagation of nonlinear quantum dust-ion acoustic (QDIA) solitary waves in a collision-less, unmagnetized four component quantum plasma consisting of electrons, positrons, ions and stationary negatively charged dust grains with dust charge variation is investigated using reductive perturbation method. The charging current to the dust grains ca...
متن کاملSurface Science Constraints to Regolith Models
Introduction: Much of what we know about airless bodies in the solar system comes from observation of their surface or surface processes. From observations come hypotheses or models that, in favorable cases, can be constrained by additional observations on returned samples. Here, we show that other useful constraints arise from the extant knowledge of surface science processes occurring in othe...

We investigated the electrostatic charging behavior of submillimeter-sized dust particles located in Saturn's magnetosphere. The charging effects we considered included electron/ion capture from the magnetospheric plasma, electron/ion capture from the solar-wind plasma, the photoelectric effect from solar radiation, and secondary electron emission from energetic electrons. In our results, we sh...
